Fire on the Mountain
"If you spent any time on the lounge level of the Black Mountain Lodge during the past couple weeks, you may have warmed yourself by the newly reconditioned upstairs fireplace. As you may know, downdrafts had on several occasions filled the lodge with smoke and ash. Thus, management wisely closed this fireplace until repairs could be planned and accomplished. After over a year of no progress on this issue, Pete Everett brought before the board of directors a motion to retain experts to evaluate and suggest a solution for this problem. Multiple opinions were aired. Several different approaches were considered. No one knew for certain the exact cause of the problem or, thus, the correct solution. Opinions and cost estimates varied widely. Pete, along with John Aylward started a fund raising drive to pay for the eventual repair and raised about $1500 toward the project. The prevailing opinion was that the chimney was built too short, and
drafting was insufficient to pull out the smoke under certain conditions. However the cost of extending the chimney was prohibitive without knowing for certain it would work. Finally, the idea was generated to install sheet metal extensions on each flue to test the theory. This was accomplished at a fraction of the cost and so far appears to have solved the problem. Skip MacFawn also designed a heavy duty sheet metal door that can be placed against the fireplace opening in the event of a serious downdrafting incident. This serves the additional purpose of preventing heat loss throught the flue as the fire burns out. Once it is determined that these measures have truly solved the problem, the board may consider retaining the services of a mason to aesthetically improve the chimney by extending the brickwork to conceal the sheet metal. Thank you to all of you who contributed to the project and be sure to stop by and warm yourself on the
third floor of the lodge!"
